Choosing a voice tier: start with the language, then the rate

It is tempting to pick the voice that impressed you on a demo. Start with what your callers speak and what a minute costs, then pay more only if you hear why.

By AI Call Studio

Someone on your team hears the top voice tier on a demo and says, “That one.” It does sound lovely. A month later, you find out that your Marathi customers are on a tier you did not check for Marathi, and each minute uses up your included minutes faster than the plan you budgeted for.

AI Call Studio has four voice tiers: Standard, Ultra, Premium and Ultra Premium. You choose per agent, and can mix them. Here is an order of decisions that avoids most regret.

First: what do your callers speak?

Not every tier speaks every language, and inside a tier, not every voice speaks all of its languages. This rules out options before you have heard anything. Hinglish, for instance, is not on every tier, and Hindi and Hinglish are separate choices.

Check the languages page for which tier speaks what, and then check the agent editor, which shows what each voice speaks. Go live is refused if an agent's voice cannot speak its language. Some languages are marked early or beta. Try those on your own callers before a full run, and have a native speaker read the greeting.

Second: what does a minute cost you?

Each tier has its own rate per minute, shown on the pricing page. A browser call on the same voice costs less, because there is no phone line. Included minutes are used by value, so a minute on a dearer voice uses more than one, in proportion to its rate.

Do the arithmetic for your own job. Take your expected monthly minutes for one agent and multiply by each rate. A reminder campaign with thousands of short calls feels a rate difference at once. A small team of high-value sales calls may not notice it. Plans decide which tiers you can use too, and the page shows that as well.

Third: what does each tier add?

  • Standard adds voice emotion, custom vocabulary and speaking speed. The free trial runs on it, so it is where most people should start and listen.
  • Ultra is the tier for the fastest replies. It always lets callers cut in.
  • Premium is the tier for the most natural turn-taking.
  • Ultra Premium offers a studio-grade voice.

Custom vocabulary deserves a mention for Indian calling, since it lets the agent be taught names and words it mishears. If your calls are full of colony names and product names, this can matter more than how rich the voice sounds.

Fourth: listen with your real script

A sample sentence tells you little. Open the Voice Library and filter by language and gender. A voice can sound wrong in a language it was not recorded in. Then set the voice under Engine in the agent's Setup tab, save, and make a test call with your real script.

Listen for what callers actually care about: amounts, dates, names and addresses. Ask someone who wasn't in the room when you chose to listen too. Test calls run the real agent and are billed at the web-call rate. If you cannot hear a difference on your own calls, stay on the cheaper tier. You can also let the calls decide by running one tier against another on the same list.

Teams are a separate decision

A team on one call costs more per minute than one agent. On Standard and Ultra, each teammate can have its own voice, so a caller can hear that someone new picked up. On Premium and Ultra Premium, the team shares a single voice for the whole call, and the hand-off and the caller's context still carry over. See one agent or a team.

A few common cases

These are starting points to test, and they are not rules.

  • High-volume reminders in Hindi or Hinglish: start on Standard. Short calls, and a rate you will feel.
  • Regional-language campaigns: pick whichever tier speaks that language and has a voice your native speaker likes.
  • Calls where callers interrupt a lot: compare Ultra and Premium on a test call, since turn-taking is what you are buying.
  • High-value consultative sales: try a dearer tier on a small A/B test, and check what it does to cost per qualified lead.

What can go wrong later

Moving an agent to a voice in a dearer set moves its calls to that tier's price per minute. If you move to a plan that doesn't sell a voice your agents use, those agents stop calling until you switch them. A new voice applies from the next call, so a change is easy to make and easy to undo.

Keep a record of why you picked what you picked. In six months somebody will ask, and the voice tier guide will help them walk through it again.
